One of the most notable features of Ocotillo Lakes is of course its water. Throughout the community are 167 acres of lakes. Reclaimed water received from the nearby City of Chandler Water Reclamation Facility provides economic, environmental and recreational benefits to Ocotillo residents who take advantage of the aesthetic beauty and oasis like atmosphere that the many features offer. The developer and community take great pride in both the Ocotillo Golf Course and the reclaimed lake system. The Community Association through a series of dedicated pumps and mainlines use the reclaimed water from the lakes for the irrigation of the lush grass, plants and trees that the Ocotillo residents and golfers from all over the world have enjoyed since Ocotillo’s inception in 1985. Consequently, billions of gallons of Arizona’s precious ground and surface water are being preserved for future generations. These lakes are not merely a waste of water for aesthetic beauty but the water is put to good use!
The Ocotillo lakes are balanced biologically, through specific breeds of fish, such as Tilapia, grass carp (white Amur), catfish, Blue Gills and goldfish. These fish are self-sustaining and require little to no outside assistance. The only fish that require regular stocking is the grass carp. Due to their high reproductive rate and ravenous appetite, the State requires that this type of fish be genetically altered (sterile) so as not to overwhelm native lakes and streams should they be removed from a “closed system” such an Ocotillo’s. All other fish thrive on the grass and materials that are found in any fresh water lake. Tilapia’s, normally an aggressive breeder, become stressed and sometimes die in colder weather, usually when the ambient lake temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This typically occurs from mid December through February. These fish assist in keeping the lake free of debris and are an excellent food source for all manner of aquatic fowl, from small black coot to the large blue heron. In addition Ocotillo enjoys ducks, geese, sandpipers, tern and an occasional pelican.
